There are a few more lessons I want to share from David Ogilvy…

Since I’m re-reading Ogilvy On Advertising right now.

Hopefully, these points help you out.

Ogilvy was the founder of the famous advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather, now known globally as Ogilvy.

He made Dove, Rolls-Royce, Guinness Beer, and American Express what the brands are today.

Here are some things we can learn from him:

  1. When creating advertising copy, keep it useful. Deliver the customer a benefit — whether education or entertainment — in every advertisement.

  2. Don’t forget to include your product/service as the focal point in the advertisement. Add the product, or at least its mechanism, in the headline and the main creative.

  3. The smartest advertisers and entrepreneurs don’t care about what they like, they worry about what resonates with the market.

  4. Sometimes the best hires are the rebellious folks who are willing to stand out and be creative. Give them space to do so.

  5. Landing big accounts and deals comes down to your integrity as a brand owner and how you present a benefit to the other party.

  6. Keeping a client/customer is always easier than chasing down a new one.

  7. Always know more about your customers and about the product than any competitor ever could. Knowledge creates the best epiphany moments in advertising.

Great lessons. Classic.

This guy knew how to advertise, and although his old ads may seem outdated now…

The principles still remain the same.
